Bourbon Street - New Orleans

The Esplanade Avenue of the Creoles

We will make our way along Esplanade Avenue, which was the original portage that European settlers walked from their landing site on Bayou St. John to the Mississippi River. Before viewing Bayou St. John, you will be taken into St. Louis Cemetery #3. The narration will include the history of cemeteries in New Orleans and the above the ground burial methods for which we are famous. We will cross Bayou St. John on our way into City Park, one of the largest urban parks in our country. You will see the Museum of Art, Botanical Gardens and the Sculpture Gardens. While in the park, you will get to see a row of live oak trees that are several hundred years old. We will ride through the Faubourg St. John and Tremé neighborhoods, learning their history and culture, finishing at the birthplace of jazz, Congo Square.

The Ride

This tour is designed for people who do some biking and are in good physical condition. Because this tours covers twice as much ground as the Esplanade tour it does not offer the narration. It will start like the Esplanade tour and follow the same route out through the cemetery and City Park where you will take the Bayou St. John bike path and pass by the Old Spanish Fort. Next is a scenic ride on the Lakeshore bike path out to the West End Park area. Then you will see the 17th Street Canal levee that failed during Hurricane Katrina. The Ride back to City Park will pass through the currently rebuilding, Lakeview neighborhood. After returning to City Park this tour will return on the same route as the Esplanade tour, going through the Faubourgs, St John and Treme and ending at Congo Square. This tour is 20 miles and 3 hours. All participants must be comfortable on a bike in an urban setting and in good physical shape. The Ride is only offered at 8am.

Narrated Ride

One of our combination rides, this tour will cover the same route as the Ride but you will get the full narration of the Esplanade tour. We will stop for a casual lunch at a neighborhood poboy shop. On this tour you will visit where one of the three major levee failures happened during hurricane Katrina. It will leave you with a clear understanding of what happened during Katrina, the timing, and the rebuilding effort. This tour has become more popular than the Ride.

Esplanade/Garden District

The second of our combination tours, The Esplanade / Garden District will allow you to compare the creole architecture of the Esplanade to what the Americans were doing in the Garden District at the same period of time. After completing the Esplanade part of the tour we will stop at a neighborhood poboy shop for an early lunch then continue up to the Garden District. We will wind through the narrow streets of the Garden District viewing some of the most amazing homes in the world. The narration will include the struggles between the new American culture and the Creole culture of New Orleans. you will also learn the history and development of the American sector. This tour will leave you with a great overview of the neighborhoods of New Orleans.
